Weigela ‘Variegata Nana’

Value: $ 15 

Weigelas are shrubs with paired, pointed-oval, rough-textured leaves, up to 4 inches long, and generous crops of bell shaped flowers in summer. The flowers are usually around an inch long and red to pink in color, though there are also white forms. The plants tend to look a bit ragged after blooming, though in our climate they can be pruned frequently for fresh waves of lusher growth and sometimes, even further waves of bloom.

Weigela 'Variegata Nana' is a smaller selection than the typical form with compact growth to about 3 feet, large leaves margined in pale yellow and pink flowers with dark centers. This is an easily grown shrub, thriving in sun and most soils, with moderate watering. Hardy to 0 degrees or less.

Philotheca myoporoides ‘Galaxy’

This closely branched shrub grows 3-4 feet high and is nearly round in profile. The stems are neatly lined by narrow 1-2 inch deep green, aromatic leaves. The younger shoots carry profuse clusters of starry white flowers opening from pink-tinged buds over several weeks in late winter and spring. Will thrive in sun or light shade, in well drained, non-alkaline soils, with moderate to occasional watering. UCSC/Koala Blooms introduction.  Hardy to 15 degrees or less.

Genista ‘Lydia’

Nearly leafless arching stems form dense, wiry mound on this evergreen scrub. Vivid clear yellow flowers cover the branches in spring. Grows 1-2 feet high and is good for ground cover.  Flowers in the Spring and likes full sun with moderate to little watering.  Durable plant for dry gardens can be useful as ground cover or on banks. Hardy to 0 degrees or less.

Erica carnea ‘Purple Beauty’

This is a low, mounding evergreen shrub, usually around 1 foot high and 2-3 feet broad when mature. It has dark green foliage and produces masses of short flower spikes with small, bright dark rosy purple blossoms in summer and fall. This hardy erica will thrive in full sun along the coast, and light shade inland, needing well drained, preferably acid soil and moderate watering. Hardy to 0 degrees.

Cistus x purpureus

Value: $ 15 

This familiar hybrid, of which only one, unnamed clone seems to be grown much in California, has a nearly round profile, growing 3-5 feet high and wide. It has narrow, slightly wavy-edged leaves up to 2 inches long, dark green above and greyish beneath. The broad-petalled flowers are up to 3 inches broad, purplish rose overall with a darker eyespot near the base of each petal. Flowers are profuse in spring and early summer.   Likes full sun in well-drained soil with occasional to little watering.  Hardy to 15 degrees or less.

Windy Oaks Estate ~ 2006 Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir – Special Burgundy Clone

Enjoy this bottle of Windy Oaks Pinot with family and friends. 

The making of Windy Oaks Estate wine begins in earnest after harvest, using classic Burgundian techniques, with gravity feed and minimal handling. Because we are an estate winery, our harvested grapes travel only a few hundred feet from the vines to the winery. Throughout harvest and winemaking, the grapes are handled very gently. A wine-writer recently described our approach as extreme minimal intervention—we try not to manipulate the wine, and use no additives such as enzymes or acidulation.

There are a variety of styles of pinot noir, in part influenced by the quality of the grapes themselves and in part based upon the winemaking techniques. Our unique site combined with our winemaking approach result in a wine, which is complex and relatively tannic, and will age well.

We complement our grape quality by using top-quality French oak barrels. Because pinot noir grapes are among the most sensitive to the way they are handled, we make wine in a way that minimizes the amount of handling, and, as mentioned, relies on gravity throughout the winemaking process.
