Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury
synthesized from traditional hatha yoga techniques and popularized beginning in
the early 1970s. Bikram’s classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set
series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. Bikram Yoga is ideally
practiced in a room heated to 105°F with a minimum humidity of 40%, and is the
most popular form of hot yoga.
The intent of the high temperature is to warm up your muscles
and enhance your body’s ability to function properly, both internally and
externally. It allows for a deeper stretch and creates a cardiovascular workout
with increases endurance and burns more calories. The heat also encourages your
body to sweat out toxins and helps to increase the efficiency of the immune
system.
The benefits of Bikram Yoga include:
- reduce stress & eliminate back pain
- improve flexibility & increase energy
- heal injuries (acute and chronic)
- lose weight / increase muscle tone
- improve concentration & balance
- lower blood pressure / cholesterol
- improve athletic ability
- prevent injury & help control chronic disease
Overall, Bikram Yoga helps promote a healthy balance between
all of your body’s systems, including skeletal, muscular, circulatory, nervous,
digestive, respiratory, endocrine, and mental. Bikram Yoga Aptos (BYA) was
founded by Nicole Duke in July of 2010.
